Unit 10 - Documentaries

 Research

Factual Programming - An introduction - Google Docs

Documentary has three categories Information, Education, Entertainment.

Informational - Is to inform the viewer on a certain topic and anything regarding it.

Educational - The intent is make the audience learn something new about the topic the video is about.

Entertainment - The intent is to purely for the sake of making entertaining  for the viewer to watch on the subject without needing long drawn out facts about the subject of the video.

6 modes/Styles of Documentary

Poetic -They focus on experiences and showing the viewers the world through difference lenses, it is abstract in nature.

Expository - They are they closest on what documentary's people consider, often with Voice of God narration it aims to persuade or inform - for example David Attenborough Blue Planet

Observational -   They aim to observe the world around them and they attempt to voice all sides of an issue by offering first hand experiences to some them without being biased about it completely neutral, the voice of God voice over can be also be implemented here but to only provide context when needed.

Participatory - They include the filmmaker in the narrative, their inclusion use there voice to prod the subjects with questions from behind the camera directly influencing the actions of the narrative, some say all documentaries are a little bit of the style also.

Reflective - Similar to participatory however they don't intervene as the latter does and watches it unfold, it emphasises the expresses  side of the film and the voiceover is questioning rather than demanding one and it often shows the real world

Performative it show subject experience an share a emotional response with the world, it often has a narrative of a investigation or a search with a satisfying conclusion, subject matter often concerns sexuality, gender etc.

Pitch

I will include a link to a google drive including our progress and what we all did, on the planning section below.

We started  the planning phase where we as group started coming up with ideas i will include the link of the document of all the ideas we as a group came up with. Two of the main ideas that we came up with that we intended to push forward was the Go Karting and Boxing, the reason why these stood out to us was, with the karting idea there is a go karting place in which gave us the idea of doing a Top Gear like situation where we would see how its done try out for ourselves then face off against the professional in the final race. Another we could do is ask the regulars at the place in a semi interview on why they do it, is it a fun activity and how someone unaccustomed with the sport enjoy it. Later on when we tried to contact the surrounding areas no one responded to the calls and did not reach back at us so we decided to put this idea on the back burner.
The Second idea which was Boxing the overall idea for this one was me and Harry train with a boxing couch called Chris which his place was the same place we were filmed a couple scenes of Counter Punch so it would be easy to acquire. We had to change the type of documentary if we intend which is Participatory into Observational due to me wanting to record now and Harrys teeth wouldn't be able to which was advised by his dentist, what we now intend to do is interview a regular already there and ask him some questions like what's like and what's his diet. Later on it was decided that we will all will interview the coach and also ask a couple of regulars there aspirations on why they got into the sport. After one last talk we ultimately decided on doing a idea on Captain Cook History  Doc instead due to time issues, for example we will plan to talk about what happened where he lived etc but trying to be entertaining so the viewers don't leave out of boredom plus its close so that always a plus. Next in the Pre Production stage we intend to make a script on what we say and do the Risk Assessment on when we do it.

Critical Analysis

One Documentary style video we took inspiration was Tom Scott on YouTube, the reason for this was we enjoyed his way of making the videos since it was a sorta walk and talk informative, another thing we would like to include that Tom Scott likes to include is when he talks to experts he positions the camera where there only visible on screen and some text below them showing what there profession is. I will include some reference photos to show what I mean. Another inspiration we will take a aspect of came from a TV show called Grand Design where they take some B roll of the surrounding environment which we want to include in this project. I will again include reference photos to show you what I mean.

Another one I took inspiration was Attenborough's type of documentary where they opening talk to the audience about a subject and relay facts and knowledge to them, but we decided to do a Tom Scott like video to include some humour sprinkled in there. The difference e between Tom scotts  type of documentary video and Attenborough  is that Toms is more Participatory and Attenborough is a mixed of Participatory and Observational and the Grand Design is an Entertainment  and observational.

Shot List

Storyboard

Planning

I included everything we did onto this google drive including the script and images on set.

Pre Production

When deciding the roles for this task I was given the ask of creating the Shot List which would go in tandem with the Script in which Harry created I also made the Release Forms and the Mood board but that is less interesting  then the Shot List I would say so I wont go into them, as before it is all in numerical order of completion on Google Drive where all of our work is together where we can avoid loosing the document and we are not scrolling through Teams chats to look for it, plus it looks neat with it all in order so its a plus. Below I will include the link to the Google Drive if you are wanting to look at the other work. Later on in the week the script had to be changed due to the Museum being closed into April and the weather report showing accounts of snow in the area, so i had to change the storyboard to fit the new script.

The Mood Board I created for the unit.

Production

Day 1 went well even with its difficulties, Oliver and Harry ventured off to Roseberry topping to film the first segment the weather that day was windy which watching the clip over is noticeable I was not there for day 1 due to time restraints since I had a Maths class and also had trouble with travel so i was left on the backburner, the script was later changed due to the Expert not appearing physically and is represented via Voice over but other than that the day went well. Day 2 was more interesting day compared to Day 1 since there was a excessive amount of snow that took total control of the clips since comparing the two days can be a bit confusing to the viewers. I was there for the final day of filming in which we took a fair share amount of B roll footage we can play while the voice over speaks what the expert wrote us about Cook.  We were there until about half past 4 in which we final scene was taken, while on set that day I took a couple of photos of the shoot to add here. I will add them below.

Evaluation

Overall I think the production of this short document went well, I witnessed the effectiveness of equipment in action which is insightful for me since I have no prior experience with the equipment itself so having that in the project was helpful for future endeavours, another thing  what also will help me in future was how to organise in google doc since its easy to navigate when its in numerical order. One thing I struggled with in this project was I don't feel like I used the camera's as much I would have wanted to but due to the equipment all being Oliver's in which i get since he has more experience than I do plus we didn't have to borrow anything but if I had to take something out of this project it would be to be more involved in the production side of it to build confidence in myself in which I need more of. Another thing that went wrong that we can learn from in the future when deciding on a particatory role make sure there 100% done since when we wanted to do the boxing idea we were initially down but complicated arose and Harry tuned down due to his braces and I wasn't fully down to do it on my own.

The Final product will be below by a link.
