Unit 10 - Documentaries
Research
Factual Programming - An introduction - Google Docs
Documentary has three categories Information, Education, Entertainment.
Informational - Is to inform the viewer on a certain topic and anything regarding it.
Educational - The intent is make the audience learn something new about the topic the video is about.
Entertainment - The intent is to purely for the sake of making entertaining for the viewer to watch on the subject without needing long drawn out facts about the subject of the video.
6 modes/Styles of Documentary
Poetic -They focus on experiences and showing the viewers the world through difference lenses, it is abstract in nature.
Expository - They are they closest on what documentary's people consider, often with Voice of God narration it aims to persuade or inform - for example David Attenborough Blue Planet
Observational - They aim to observe the world around them and they attempt to voice all sides of an issue by offering first hand experiences to some them without being biased about it completely neutral, the voice of God voice over can be also be implemented here but to only provide context when needed.
Participatory - They include the filmmaker in the narrative, their inclusion use there voice to prod the subjects with questions from behind the camera directly influencing the actions of the narrative, some say all documentaries are a little bit of the style also.
Reflective - Similar to participatory however they don't intervene as the latter does and watches it unfold, it emphasises the expresses side of the film and the voiceover is questioning rather than demanding one and it often shows the real world
Performative - it show subject experience an share a emotional response with the world, it often has a narrative of a investigation or a search with a satisfying conclusion, subject matter often concerns sexuality, gender etc.
Pitch
We started the planning phase where we as group started coming up with ideas i will include the link of the document of all the ideas we as a group came up with. Two of the main ideas that we came up with that we intended to push forward was the Go Karting and Boxing, the reason why these stood out to us was, with the karting idea there is a go karting place in which gave us the idea of doing a Top Gear like situation where we would see how its done try out for ourselves then face off against the professional in the final race. Another we could do is ask the regulars at the place in a semi interview on why they do it, is it a fun activity and how someone unaccustomed with the sport enjoy it. Later on when we tried to contact the surrounding areas no one responded to the calls and did not reach back at us so we decided to put this idea on the back burner.
The Second idea which was Boxing the overall idea for this one was me and Harry train with a boxing couch called Chris which his place was the same place we were filmed a couple scenes of Counter Punch so it would be easy to acquire. We had to change the type of documentary if we intend which is Participatory into Observational due to me wanting to record now and Harrys teeth wouldn't be able to which was advised by his dentist, what we now intend to do is interview a regular already there and ask him some questions like what's like and what's his diet. Later on it was decided that we will all will interview the coach and also ask a couple of regulars there aspirations on why they got into the sport. After one last talk we ultimately decided on doing a idea on Captain Cook History Doc instead due to time issues, for example we will plan to talk about what happened where he lived etc but trying to be entertaining so the viewers don't leave out of boredom plus its close so that always a plus. Next in the Pre Production stage we intend to make a script on what we say and do the Risk Assessment on when we do it.
Critical Analysis
One Documentary style video we took inspiration was Tom Scott on YouTube, the reason for this was we enjoyed his way of making the videos since it was a sorta walk and talk informative, another thing we would like to include that Tom Scott likes to include is when he talks to experts he positions the camera where there only visible on screen and some text below them showing what there profession is. I will include some reference photos to show what I mean. Another inspiration we will take a aspect of came from a TV show called Grand Design where they take some B roll of the surrounding environment which we want to include in this project. I will again include reference photos to show you what I mean.
