Unit 9 - Music Video Production

Task 1 - Research 

What is a Music Video?

A Music video is a recording imagery that will match up with a piece of music.

The Main 5 category's  to every music video is as follows Performance, Narrative, Concept, Lyrical and Animated. 

Performance - What makes this unique is that the Artists playing that are the ones been recorded.

Narrative -  This one is unique since it tells a story and keeps the audience attention since they wonder what happens next.

Concept - This one is unique since its quite abstract but it will keep audience guessing, often associated with Dance.

Lyrical - This one is unique due to words and colours flashing across the video, the least used one out all 5

Animated - This one is unique to its self due it being entirely animated through out.  

These can of course be mixed together to form they own video, so its nice to mix and match if you want to make it interesting. 

Class Task - Music Video Analysis - I aint your Momma 

Lyrics match the imagery shown on screen where its off her giving some food to someone establishing that she does not want to do this. The genre is late 1960s due to one shot of a old TV and of the attire and set of the video, the camera work further push's the message of the music video due it shows flash's shots of other people having the same problem. The music matches the tempo which it is fast pasted where its showing multiple times this happened proving this isn't a one time thing. Finally the narrative of the music video shows  that multiple people across the country had the problem and they band together in solidarity and shout together in the last shot the title of the video. The Impact the video has is that they wont take any more mistreatment and mindlessly follow orders without anything in return. 

another example of a music analysis would be the song Hope by NF this song goes over his emotional state over the years and how it affected him when he had a kid which is expressed through the imagery in the music video, another thing you can se in the music video is he included refencing or call backs in previous works he did so the listeners can see a sort of mental progression through his music.

The differences between these two music videos is that NF music video is more internal where he talks about his thoughts on where he is mentally and the I isn't your momma music video is addressed to a certain type of individual that don't pull there own weight at times, so i would classify it as external since its talking about a person.

    

Task 2 -  Design 

Design Diary

One video that inspired me was Eminem's song " Godzilla" the reason for this is that throughout the video it has of graphical designs and effects that make the video more interesting to look at but it also adds a nice tribute to a person at the end which makes it sweet for him to include due there close relationship. 

One potential song we can turn into a music video is Green Day " American Idiot " the reason for this is is that we can easily turn something related the Performance Category but also mix it with possibly ether Concept or Narrative. Another idea I had to get the brief idea for the narrative aspect of our music video would be Billy Joel's " Piano Man " since it tells a story throughout and we can maybe add that to the music video. A final idea was interesting to me was Sias " Elastic Heart " the reasoning behind this is because the form of music video it is is concept in which would be difficult to delve into our self's but would be a nice challenge.

My 3 Songs ideas are as follows Sias " Unstoppable", Believer by Imagine Dragons and Enemy by Imagine Dragons. The reasoning behind these choices is that the visuals can be changed and the lyrics have a meaning behind plus they all have there own music videos, out of all three my favourite and the one i will pitch to the rest of the group will be Unstoppable by Sia since there's good message of Resilience in which the group could make for a Concept or Narrative Music video. If by chance my idea is chosen we can decide as group how to take the song  for the music video.   

Goggle Drive - Green Light Pitches

Here is an image of the PowerPoint I created and pitched to the team and Kane who would give us the green light or not. The Second one down is Oliver's Greenlight Pitch we got close of doing this one but chose Grayson's since it was interesting plus we wanted them a chance to direct for the first time since there year 1. The Third one down and the overall one we did choose was Grayson's Green light pitch where they showed them the overall idea and some references of the type of style and shots we could include to make it look good. Lastly the one but not least Hollies green light pitch equally as good as the rest but the type of vibe we wanted to incorporate into the video.  

Task 3 - Planning 

We began the pre production paperwork with the help of Oliver's handy organisation skills he gave everyone 3 sets of tasks to do with recommended deadlines I was assigned to make the Shot list, the costume and Prop list and the Call sheets, I will include all of the pre production work below this paragraph which is all in numerical order of completion. The first thing i did was the costume and prop list where we as a group went to the costume room to find the right outfits for the video with the help of the Director Grayson we found the right clothes for the job, it was taken from the spot we put it in so we later put up a sign. After that I created the list and the next day we were told to continue it i did the next task which was Shortlist, I completed it with quick succession due to the help of Hollie. And the final task I did was The Call Sheet which I made for the both the days we filmed including all the actors information plus the crews if needed.

Task 4 - Production

Film shooting started on the 18th where it was myself as the camera operator, Oliver and Harry as Spotlight duty due to the shots needed it for environment shot, Harry came in due to Hollie being out for the day since she was at Uni and finally Grayson being the director of it all. It went well for day 1 where all needed shots that we needed were completed with a hour to spare. Day 2 will begin on Friday the 20th October where the final shots will be made and the editing will commence next week.

While editing is being made to the music video I will also include a couple of BTS photos of set on the last day.

Task 5 - Evaluation  

Overall I think this project was a nice change of pace due to me  doing something out of my comfort zone since music videos have always not been my forte, so branching out with something like this is good in its own way plus, it has gave me some  insight on the creation of music video productions and how they get typically made and why they get created. The Pre Production side of this unit went without a hitch due to Oliver's diligence and overall neatness due to him compiling all the paperwork in order of completion, since there was no stress or miscommunication within the team which got things got done a lot more quicker and smother alongside it. The research side of this unit was also somewhat interesting to know since I found out all the different types of music video there is for example, Lyrical and Animated.  If I had to change something when doing this project would be maybe developing the overall story/plot but do to the nature of it being a music video, it would be difficult to do. Another thing that I would like to include I struggled with the editing process since i had some trouble stretching out the clips to the 4 minute mark and I will have to gain help from Oliver to finish it before the deadline since he completed before anyone else since he has experince on editing, so a goal that i strive for in the upcoming units is just to experiment more with the editing software since there is a lot i don't know in which I am genuinely interested to know which would help in the future not jut as a editor but also a cameraman. Lastly a thing I would like to improve on and experiment with to see if i enjoy the role would be Director or even Director of Photography more often so I'm more accustomed with it and to be more confident being provided the position.
