Unit 2 - Suspense Piece
Task 1 - Research
Lighting Types
In this Task we found out different type of Lighting and what it all means for example Hard light is shadows and clear which gives the effect of an intense and dramatic atmosphere and soft lighting is no shadows and no contrast which is the opposite since is gives the effect of somewhat of a magical place or even a dreamlike scene. We also went over how colour could convey in the lighting for example Warm lights are a contrast between a yellow and orange which gives of a happy feeling but on the opposite White lights could give a medical look and how could be overpowering. This is a grid of all the different types of lighting and what they mean for the audience
Lighting Design Task
In this task we made a Storyboard panel on how to use lighting in a story and in a group we drew a silouette of a figure in the darkness of a open door and how it contrasts between the cold darkness and the the lone light bulb illuminating the rest of the room and the presence of the figure is the centre of the shot and is the only focus, we took inspiration from the 2013 short film Lights out this is the drawing we did to show how lighting could mean everything.
Props Makeup and Location
Location
The location will be throughout Whitby which includes a dark alleyway, The 199 steps, Whitby port and the Abbey we picked these locations because its only minutes long from each other and since it is a short story it will have a couple of dialogue here is pictures of the locations excluding the dark alleyway since its gonna any spooky alleyway we find.
Makeup
The makeup intended for this will be the following a Bald cap, Sharp teeth and pale skin this will make the monster look ghoulish and sinister they will also be wearing old Victorian clothes to show he has been around a lot the inspiration for this would be Nosferatu
Props
The props will be a camera and some fake blood so its more dramatic effect to look more suspenseful and establishes the stakes on what happens when the creature catches you and the camera prop is involved because the main character is a photographer
Genre/Target Audience:
My target audience is PG-13 as this audience can understand the key elements that we plan to bring to this short piece, for example the gore throughout the film would be too much to let someone under this age watch. I also think that this target age is great as the audience is more mature and able to understand the stakes and key moments in the film. As for the genre I would describe this film as a horror/thriller as its majorly filled with horror aspects and thriller aspects, for example the horror aspects would be the overall dark and unwelcoming lighting mixed with the scary creature chasing our protagonists. I would say that the thriller aspects would also be the chase scenes between the creature and the protagonists and how they build suspense and tension as the scenes play out until it is broken by the climax.
Overall suspense
The overall suspense will be mostly situational since it will be around the creatures ace and overall aura around it we can use that sudden unease to make the shot more impactful for example in the movie Drive they are in an elevator and the main character is next to a man with a gun since they are so close together it will make uneasy since they will wonder on how they will get out of this in such close quarters and the climax is introduced when they give quick kiss and the fight starts. This shows how suspense can keep the audience on their toes on what happens next this is a shot from that scene.
The difference between Primary and Secondary Research is that primary is finding the information on your own and Secondary is using someone else to do it . The types of Primary research is the following Surveys, Focus Groups and Interviews and the types of Secondary research you can do is encyclopaedias like Wikipedia, libraries and articles. The type of research i did on the film was Secondary in which it was Google and IMDB since it knew the most when looking for a specific scene a movie, it had a impact since it took less time then it would have done if I had done any primary research.
Colour Theory
Colour Theory is using the colour wheel to make a specific colour convey a certain emotion for example Blue could mean Loneliness, Sadness and Ice and in this task I would go over a couple of colours and how they could be portrayed in film and Lighting exposure and Art direction and also Hue and saturation.
This is a picture of the task that i did that went over how the colour Orange can be used in film and how it can be used to make the audience feel something
Orange can be used for Heat, Energy but it can even mean hopelessness
Hue is that colour is used in the shot and it to use it in the scene your trying to make here is an example of this. In this shot you can see how disconnected he is from everyone else from the overuse of blue and this one is
This is from Mad Max and is used on how different they are to each other from the the warm light in the back and the cold blue in the front.
Saturation
Saturation can be used in war movies like saving private Ryan to show gritty and brutal it is and the scenes have colour in them but the little life in them to covey how little hope they have in the battlefield.
This is a shot from Hacksaw Ridge and the saturation is turned all the way down to show how theirs little life and happiness there is for them.Art direction is when colour is used to covey a message for the the story for example in Country for old men Anton's clothes is so different to everyone else's to show that he isn't from her and how different from everyone he is from everyone around him.
The contrast between Anton's clothes in which is all black and this local shows how different he is to other people
The difference between adding colour to show the audience how the character is feeling and simply using dark lights is what kind of movie it is for example, if its dark war film using black and grey colours would show how bad the characters conditions were in the story but if it is a happy movie like the upcoming movie like Barbie it shows the overall tone of the movie.
Task 2 - Design
This is the decision we made in the making of the story for the Whitby suspense piece. We were going for a it follows bird box thing were the monster was invincible but we scrapped it due it due to how much work we would off had to put into it to create it and it was only a minute short film so we went for a nosforatu type creature instead. The second decision was to change the main characters gender from boy to girl to fit in the cast we were given and had to change the script to this idea and finally the current decision up to this point is using the extras more to make them become background creature to involve the rest of the cast we had to change the story a bit to include this and the abbey scene at the end to include them. The film crew roles are Martin as Director, I as the Camera man Director of Photography which is Daniels Jack is location picker and Kenz is Assistant Director.
What i need to work on for this is using more colour theory in projects.
Task 3 - Planning
Script for Whitby Project
This is the title of the Whitby project I took place in and the script was made by Martin Cunningham.
Shot List
This is Kenz Days research on the Whitby project in which he did Shots Research in which he went over how the angle of a shot can effect the overall suspense of the movie and the example to show of this was in the 1978 movie Halloween.

Task 4 - Production
What happened at the Whitby trip is One the first day, we arrived at the hostel with the actors and the makeup crew and with a quick debrief we had a quick walk about around the area to have a feel for the area when we where told by the staff that we couldn't do the abbey scene when we expected due the high winds we continued the day when we waited until the makeup crew were done and started the first scene at the graveyard where we did the filming there, later on in day when we got the rooms and had a break with the prepared tea we ventured down the 199 steps to film some shot since we were behind we took some shots with the lights and headed back. The Second day we filmed the final shots at Whitby Harbour to film and did the final shots at Whitby at the 199 steps. Finally we will be doing the final shot at the college to piece it all together. The editing was done by mostly by Martin and Daniel in which they did the bulk of it since they knew more about the software more then I did, although I did help with the final shot we did within the college. How I felt with the software was since I am a novice at it I did not know all the functions with it but i did know the overall fundamentals so I think it was a good attempt.
Task 5 - Evaluation
Although the overall shooting didn't go as planned but it mostly went well, one thing we did not expect was the heavy downpour that deeply effected the full shoot, for example we had to scrap the Abbey scene since the winds made the staff close the abbey down earlier than we hoped.it would not been enough time to shoot it so we had to make the new scene on the harbour the next day. Also we had a tiring effort to shoot something in the night only to be almost overwhelmed by the winds. We would have prevented this by having a contingency plan just in case something would happen. Another thing that happened in which can be improved on next time would be actors hanging about when they don't need to, although them sitting around is part of the industry it would help if the AD told them when and where they are need at that time so no one is around for no specific reason. Finally another thing that happened in which could be improved on would be shot lists, the reason for this would be that so everyone knows what they are doing at all times and no one is scrambling around looking for the next shot, to fix this would having a pre made shot list so everyone knows what to do next.
My target for my next production I am in will be to provide detailed responses to the tasks that were given to me and to provide all links and images to things i took part in to provide further context to the tasks in general.
